We’re knee deep in a municipal election here in London Ontario, which falls fairly close to a recent Provincial election, and only a couple of years removed from a Federal election. Because of the fairly tight timelines of municipal elections (candidates had to declare themselves formally before the end of August, and voting takes place October 22nd), the signs are out in force.
I’ve talked to a number of people who’s opinions on this years signage varies between interest to annoyance. In my own drive, I pass by between 100 and 200 signs depending on the route I take on my 11 minute commute to the NorthIQ offices. The number varies so widely because the lesser trafficked routes tend to have fewer signs, while large public lots tend to have many more signs, and the university is virtually sign free.
I was thinking about how these signs are a very specific type of marketing, and how many of them have the same benefits, drawbacks, risks, and pitfalls of the marketing we do every day. (more…)

Our Manage Comics blog was recently suspended by Medium for no justifiable reason. To date the only explanation we have been given is that we were accidentally caught in their spam filter.
This caused a huge impact on our business, saw our page rankings plummet, created dozens of orphaned links from sites that had referenced us, and left us scrambling to solve a problem that our vendor has not been able to give us a reasonable explanation behind.
Because of the negative effects on our business, and Medium’s lack of a reasonable explanation for what happened, we have removed all content from Medium, and we are firmly advising our clients against using Medium as a blogging platform. (more…)

Sorry were you looking for content about quitting your job and/or Super Mario Bros? My bad…
Ever click on a link and the resulting content is not at all about what you clicked on or it wasn’t exactly what they promised? Find it annoying and frustrating?
The term for this tactic is “click bait”, and this is where the internet seems to be moving. More and more marketers are using this same methodology to maximize clicks to their free downloads. Promise something big to encourage form completes, meanwhile the actual content is a shadow of what was promised.
It’s annoying. It’s frustrating. And it’s not sustainable for building a business. (more…)

Building websites is not hard. Pretty much anyone with access to a computer, some rudimentary HTML skills, and some basic understanding of the way the internet works can build a website.
We’ve established that everyone should have a website in our post on Digital Sharecropping – “Digital Sharecropping is Dangerous“. Not everyone asks the follow up question though.
What is your website doing for you? Is it generating leads? Is it creating opportunities? Is it helping to build your brand?
